Matchup of the Day: Underrated Michael J. Fox Movies
The Hard Way VS Atlantis: The Lost Empire
After never even knowing it existed, I just watched The Hard Way this weekend after listlessly picking through Netflix’s thinning Instant Watch options, and came out pleasantly surprised. As a lover of hip-hop, any movie that features LL Cool J and an unfathomably young Mos Def (or Yasiin Bey as he’s now known) is going to be right up my alley.
Fox plays a somewhat diva-ish actor, who’s a bit of a dunce, but is world famous for playing Harrison Ford-type roles. It’s a bit off-putting but Fox is just so damn likable that you forget the implausibility of him as an action star. The movie’s all about Fox following James Woods’ grizzled cop to research a role, and the friction between the two. It’s a simple buddy cop movie formula but it works well. Be on the lookout for a super young Christina Ricci, as well as the always great Luis Guzman, and Avatar’s Stephen Lang as the bad guy.
Atlantis is another Fox movie that doesn’t seem to get much love, but is really solid. The Disney-animated movie shows that “2D” animation is alive and well, even surpassing CGI in many ways.
