North American audiences are forced to wait until Friday, May 3, for the domestic release of Marvel’s Iron Man 3, but that hasn’t stopped Tony Stark from drumming up a massive box office take this past weekend in foreign markets. The sequel grossed $195.3 million in 42 markets, which beats out the $185.1-million international debut for The Avengers.
Now, speculation has started that Iron Man 3 could possibly match or even beat The Avengers at home, which had the highest-ever opening weekend gross domestically, at $207.4 million. (The Avengers is currently the third highest-grossing movie of all time, after James Cameron‘s Avatar and Titanic.)
Iron Man 3‘s take is nearly double what Iron Man 2 grossed on its international opening weekend in 2010.
68 lucky Flickchart users have been able to rank Iron Man 3 so far. After being ranked 632 times, it’s earning a very respectable 65% winning percentage.
For those of us in North America who have to wait until Friday, check out the trailer below to whet your appetite.
