Furious 7 has become the seventh-highest grossing film of all time after dominating the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row. The film has now grossed $1.1 billion worldwide, which not only shatters the franchise record – previously held by Fast & Furious 6 at $788.7 million worldwide – but puts it ahead of such billion-dollar-grossing blockbusters as Transformers: Dark of the Moon and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will doubtlessly put an end to Furious 7‘s reign when it opens May 1st, but it’s safe to say that Paul Walker‘s final Furious film has surpassed even the most lofty expectations.

Despite Furious 7‘s dominance, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 managed to eke out $24 million over the weekend. This makes it the highest opener with a solo starring role for Kevin James after the original Paul Blart, and proves that there’s no accounting for taste.
