Weekend Box Office: “Focus” Steals First Place on a Quiet Weekend

Focus, the new heist movie starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie, easily took the lead this weekend, though its numbers were pretty modest. Its $18.7 million take was slightly lower than that of Crazy, Stupid, Love., the last movie by directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, and certainly lower than those usually pulled in by former box office juggernaut Smith. Smith hasn’t been too visible of late, however, with Men in Black III and the disastrous After Earth his only major credits in the past six years.

In its third weekend, Kingsman: The Secret Service held up well, and pulled in $11.9 million. Right behind it was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water with $10.5 million in its fourth week. Both films dropped a reasonable 35% from their takes last weekend.

Meanwhile, at #1 for the past two weeks, Fifty Shades of Grey plummeted 52.6% to wind up at #4 this weekend with $10.5 million. The fad is ending, but not before Fifty Shades has pulled in over $147 million domestically for Universal.

The other new wide release this weekend was The Lazarus Effect. The horror film starring Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass opened with only $10 million, which is successful enough given a budget for the film of only $3.3 million. Lazarus is projected to finish its run in the $25 million range.
