The new heist flick, Focus, from Crazy, Stupid, Love. directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, lifted $6.47 million from moviegoers pockets on Friday, putting it on track for a $20 million opening weekend. This is right on par with Crazy, Stupid, Love.‘s debut, and with thrillers like Limitless releasing around the same time in recent years. It’s a little below expectations for the star power of Will Smith, but nonetheless returns the star to the top of the box office following the disastrous After Earth in 2013.
The other major release this weekend, The Lazarus Effect, scored $3.8 million for second place on Friday. If the Olivia Wilde-starring film about the reanimation of dead bodies follows typical horror trends, it should finish with about $10 million for the weekend.
It’ll be a race between holdovers Fifty Shades of Grey and Kingsman: The Secret Service for third place, with the films having pulled in $3.5 million and $3.1 million on Friday, respectively.
