It has been thirteen years since Jurassic Park III bowed in theaters. This weekend, audiences are proving that they are hungry for more dinosaurs, as Jurassic World is taking the box office by storm, and earning more in one weekend than its predecessor did during its entire run.
With an estimated $204.6 million domestic total, Jurassic World is having the second highest-grossing weekend of all time, blowing past this year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and nearly catching the $207.4 million opening of the first Avengers. With an addition $307.2 million from foreign ticket sales, Jurassic World has already amassed over half a billion dollars in just one weekend. It will become the third film this year, after Ultron and Furious 7, to cross the billion-dollar blockbuster threshold, and should easily become the highest-grossing movie of the year…at least until Star Wars: The Force Awakens bows in December.
It’s a tremendous milestone for director Colin Trevorrow, who was chosen to helm Jurassic World on the strength of his indie directorial debut, Safety Not Guaranteed. And it has certainly cemented star Chris Pratt‘s place at the top of the Hollywood A-list.
Audiences are proving they were ready to go back to the park. With Jurassic World‘s dino-sized $511.8 million debut, odds are they’ll get a fifth chance sooner rather than later.
